Produce that is 1500 miles fresher!

Bates' Hilltop Troque Garden is an eco-market garden situated on 11.5 acres of land consisting of 9000 square feet of raised beds and 5088 square feet of high tunnels all working towards deriving a comfortable subsistence from the smallest area of soil. Since 1988 we have been selling tomatoes and melons at farmers markets, which our customers claim are the world's best!

As a eco-market garden all production is sustainable and chemical free, the soil is fed to raise earth worms that produce castings five times richer in soil nutrients than the soil in which they live. To produce worms the soil needs lots of organic matter and micro-organisms to feed them. So a lot of mulch and cover crops are used to feed the soil so it can feed the plant. Compost tea is used to boost the microbes needed to break down the organic matter. Annual soil tests keep track of whats going on.

This eco market strives to grow the best nutrient dense vegetables possible at a reasonable price with natures help.

Even though it s free, we try to not waste solar energy. 60 raised beds have a southeast aspect on a 5% slope. This means no morning sun is used to remove the dew from the plant as with beds with a southern aspect, and maximum solar gain is achieved in the afternoon, giving the beds a micro-climate equal to flatland 300 miles south.
We have a 72x28 foot high tunnel that maximizes solar energy by trapping it with hugelkultur beds. Hugelkultur beds are eastern European technology. they are formed by digging trenches and refilling them with wood & covering them with soil. this provides a large amount of carbon, hold a large amount of water, and are one heck of a nice microbe condo which feeds the soil.
