“Becoming a Localvore:
Healthy Food Grows Close to Home”
presented by:
The 100 Mile Diet Team, Lisa Markley, MS, RD
and Jill McLaughlin, Certified Holistic Health Counselor
Inspired by a Canadian couple who committed to only eating foods grown within 100 miles of their home for an entire year, in 2006 a crack team of Kansas City eaters explored the area looking for sources of local food. Using the Kansas City Food Circle’s Directory of Local Organic and Free Range Producers as their guide, they published a series of ten articles in Present Magazine to share their experiences along the way. In this workshop, the KC 100 Mile Diet Team will share firsthand accounts of their local food adventures.
I. Introduction to the KC 100 Mile Diet Project given by farmer Tom Ruggieri
II. The KC 100 Mile Diet Team will share a short personal history of how they became interested in eating local foods and their experiences discovering local foods as part of the 100 Mile Diet Project
III. Lisa & Jill will share the Health & Nutrition Aspects of Eating Local Foods
IV. “Ripe for Change” short film (8-10 minutes)
http://www.mediathatmattersfest.org/mtm_good_food/
(click on #16 to view the short film)
V. Questions and Answers (10 minutes)
Attendees will receive media CDs created by the team that contain a compilation of their articles written for Present Magazine as well as recipes featuring local foods, a resource list for further information, and the 2007 KC Food Circle Directory of Local Organic and Free Range Producers.
Handouts on Tips for Getting Started on a Local Diet and the Top 10 Reasons to Eat Local based on http://100milediet.org/getting-started-guide/ and http://100milediet.org/why-eat-local/ will also be provided.
