Why You Should Join the Kansas City Food Circle

The food system lies at the very heart of our health, our economy, and our local community. Unfortunately, the drive to become the world's low cost producer of food has substantially backfired. Our present food system is ecologically destructive, inhumane, increasingly subject to contamination and much less efficient than it might appear. In a word, it's unsustainable.

Can we turn this dreadful situation around? Yes, it’s already happening. People are jumping off the industrial food treadmill, and the organic food trade is booming nationwide. But there's no need to send our food dollars to California or Florida when farmers are practicing sustainable agriculture in our area! A new trend has emerged where even a few carefully cultivated acres of land, near a metropolitan area, can support a family when produce is marketed directly to eaters.

Thus the goal of the Kansas City Food Circle is to educate the public, dramatically increase the demand for locally grown, organic and humanely produced food, and help family farmers stay on the land. To this end we publish a Producers Directory, operate a voice mail Hotline (816-374-5899) to provide current information, table at events and speak to community groups. Every year we organize an Exhibition of Farmers (our EAT LOCAL! expo) where people can meet local farmers and discover the joys of eating local.

Our new web log (a KCFoodCircle BLOG - to help us post timely announcements) and our new KC Food Circle Bulletin Board (protected member list - secure registratiobn - more interactive) offer more direct input. Entries from the old bulletin board will be archived as a searchable web reference and/or re-posted in a KC Food Circle Knowledgebase.
